The governments in Karnataka, Maharashtra and Delhi have issued guidelines – similar to those followed during Covid-19 – to ensure preparedness for potential health challenges related to HMPV.

India Confirms First Cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) as Infections Rise in Bengaluru and Ahmedabad

India reported its first confirmed cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) on Monday, according to the Union Health Ministry. The cases were detected in Bengaluru and Ahmedabad, marking the virus’s debut in the country.

In Bengaluru, a three-month-old infant who has since been discharged and an eight-month-old baby currently recovering in a hospital are the confirmed cases. A separate case was identified in a two-month-old infant in Ahmedabad. All three children and their families have no recent travel history, ruling out exposure to the virus from other countries or regions.

HMPV, a globally recognized respiratory virus, has been under closer scrutiny since an outbreak was reported in China. The virus is known for causing flu-like symptoms and can affect individuals of all ages, though children under five, older adults, and those with compromised immune systems are particularly vulnerable.

The Union Health Ministry is actively monitoring the situation through its surveillance networks, while the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) will continue to track the virus’s circulation over the coming months.

In response to the rising cases, state governments in Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Delhi have issued health guidelines similar to those implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic. These guidelines are aimed at ensuring preparedness and addressing potential public health challenges related to HMPV.

HMPV was first identified in 2001 and is part of the same family of viruses responsible for causing respiratory infections like the flu and the common cold.
