Mumbai: On April 30, the Versova police booked film producer Prerna Arora for allegedly defrauding her Fanney Khan co-producer, Kashish Khan alias Nafisa Khan, of ₹1.33 crore.
According to the FIR, Khan, 37, a resident of Andheri West, met Arora in 2018 through mutual friends. Arora, who lives in Hiranandani, Powai, introduced herself as a film producer with past collaborations involving Bollywood stars such as Aishwarya Rai, Akshay Kumar, and John Abraham—credentials that reportedly helped earn Khan’s trust.
Arora allegedly claimed she had a ₹60 crore fixed deposit but was unable to obtain a loan against it. She then approached Khan to invest in a film project, promising attractive returns. At the time, Arora was working on Batti Gul Meter Chalu and Fanney Khan, and proposed that Khan invest ₹50 lakh in Fanney Khan. In return, she promised Khan ₹10 lakh in profit, a 5% share of the film’s earnings, and co-producer credit.
Khan agreed and issued a ₹50 lakh cheque from her Axis Bank account in March 2018. Although a contract was signed, it was drawn up between Khan and Arora’s mother, Protima Arora, listed as director of Sudha Kriraz Entertainment Pvt. Ltd.
The film Fanney Khan, starring Aishwarya Rai, Anil Kapoor, and Rajkummar Rao, was released in 2019. However, Kashish Khan’s name did not appear in the credits as a co-producer, nor did she receive the promised 5% share in the film’s profits. When she confronted producer Prerna Arora, she was reportedly told that Arora’s father was unwell. Arora also showed her a fixed deposit certificate worth ₹60 crore and assured her that the investment would be returned.
Between March 2018 and January 2019, Arora allegedly accepted an additional ₹83 lakh from Khan in multiple transactions. Despite repeated assurances, Arora failed to return the total sum within the agreed timeframe, allegedly defrauding Khan of ₹1.33 crore in total.
In the meantime, Arora was arrested by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) in connection with a separate cheating case. During this period, Khan discovered that the ₹60 crore fixed deposit document shown to her was fake. After Arora’s release from jail, Khan demanded repayment. Arora reportedly issued several cheques, all of which bounced.
Eventually, Khan filed a formal complaint against Arora and her mother, Protima Arora. The Versova police registered a case against the duo under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating and dishonesty), 465 (forgery), 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating), and 471 (using as genuine a forged document).
